But without Schröder, Müntefering has to stretch out to the right in order to negotiate successfully with Merkel. And if you stretch something out too far, it has the tendency to get thin. That is what happened to Müntefering now.

I suppose if the SPD had had a chancellor-in-waiting other than Muentefuring they could have let him/her lead the negotiations. As it turned out, it seems that Muentefuring got forced into a role he didn't want.
