Is there any way to "gather up" a diary and the thread of comments into a single file "suitable for printing"?

Well there are a couple of options.  The first is just to click "print" from your browser when you're reading a Diary you want to read offline.  Some browsers also let you "save" a page for offline viewing/reading as well.

Another option is to save an individual webpage on your computer, usually (F)ile then (S)ave Page As.  Then you can read it or forward it or put it on a disk to take home.

If you want to print a webpage without all the images, you can turn off image viewing in your browser.  This is done differently for each browser so I can't walk you through it step by step.

And last but not least, you can just click on (E)dit and (S)elect All then (E)dit and (C)opy and all the text will be highlighted, which you can copy to a text program like Word or Notepad.

Hope this helps even if I'm not an elf!

Thanks for the suggestions, most of which I already use from time to time. Thanks also for not mentioning that it's not "ecologically correct" to print too much. As to not being an elf, today I am pretending to be a gnome (cf. diary), but even we "under the mountain" folk can't resist your elfin smile, on display at Flogging the Simian. By the way, how's the dating service going?
