One problem I see

is the lack of migration between the various nations. They have no need for a
lingua franca
, as it were. Some nations like Switzerland do have a lot of overlap, and I have no idea how they get around it, but certainly there's nothing like the homogenousness of America. I personally think Canada looks more like what the EU will eventually look like.

I too believe that Canada is a more plausible model than the US. And Canada has it easy compared with Europe, language-wise.
