your anecdotal evidence fits the general public opinion here quite well. Nearly everyone is pessimistic about the economy, the demographics, the politics. And it is just this pessimism that is becoming a factor which itself impedes a positive development (see e.g. the problem of consumer confidence). That's why the
Economist
-story is so important.
