You're right, that is a factor. But that's normal. To take an extreme example a friend of mine who is right-libertarian would, on the surface, be much closer on economic issues (as based on their platform) to the Repubs than the Dems, but he can't stand Bush for obvious reasons. Or take the extreme right in Poland. On economic issues they are fairly left wing, but no left winger in their right mind would vote for them.

In the case of Germany I dislike the LP for its SED past and for Lafontaine's current racism - the stuff he wrote in his book is worse than anything he said in his speeches btw. As a result I don't really care what their official platform is - they're beyond the pale for me. I also haven't been particularly impressed by Schroeder's performance as chancellor, on the other hand I don't know how Merkel would be.
