Thank you for this thoughtful and encouraging diary. Aslan's book has been on my wish list at amazon for a while now. (The list is upwards of 150 titles and growing. So many books, so little time.) Your review has pushed it to the top of the list. I heartily agree with others who encourage you to crosspost this. It is the most interesting and encouraging thing I have read about the future of Islam in quite a long time.

Now where are we going and what's with the handbasket?

I heartily recommend the book, it is a well written overview of Islam and an antidote to some of the frothing that goes on, without being too idealistic.
