This was one of the best reads I've had recently.  The history , the writing, fantastico.  Thanks you gave me something today.

I liked the way you did the summary at the end and it was good too.  when I read your summary item number 6,  

    (6)    If we have faith in our values we should not see this high point of "Islamic fundamentalism" presaging eternal conflict, but as the symptoms of the struggle that can bring a more moderate Islam to the fore.
what immediately leapt to my mind was that we have no faith!

Perhaps that is too strong, but there is a kernel of truth to my first reaction.  For the majority in the "west" our gods have been abandoned since the world wars and our struggle has become one between a relativly small segment of Christian fundamentalists and those that hold no beliefs too dearly.

"Faith" as a generality in the West is an interesting discussion, maybe it deserves a diary.
