I'm getting to this late, but I wanted to have time to read it properly. It's a fantastic piece of work, Metatone, huge kudos to you. To Aslan too, obviously, but you summarize and convey his story fully and clearly. I've learned a lot from this -- not just useful knowledge and facts, but a perspective. My feeling is that it's, by and large, a perspective we should assimilate and live with.

Thanks for one of the best diaries I've seen on ET.

Thankyou for the kind words. I would urge you to read the book if you get the time and opportunity as I've naturally had to leave a lot out.

I am glad this diary seems to work for a number of people here on ET, because as you say Aslan presents a very important perspective to inform our debates that deal with Islam and the Middle East. In particular I think it should remind us to think carefully about some of the assumptions being made about Iran at the moment.

(Strangely this diary seems to have risen again into the Recommended box. I guess that's an artifact of the small number of people who press the Recommend button, so if a couple more read it and hit the button, it rises like a zombie?)
