I've read a great many of Mazower's books. He takes a special interest in the Balkans, and especially Greece. His latest book Salonica is about the great history of the most multicultural city in Europe. Salonica was home to hundreds of thousands of Jews, a great many Slavs (Bulgars and Pomaks and Macedonians), Albanians, Armenians, Turks, Egyptians, and of course Greeks. Mazower provides a fascinating history of the city, full of anecdotal details (which I am keen on), and he relates how nationalism and population movements and Nazi extermination of the Jews changed the multicultural fabric of the city forever.

Reading his book, you begin to see that in terms of tolerance for other cultures, we definitely moved backward in the 20th century.

Personally, I blame that on the romantic nationalist movements of the 19th century. They just needed a few decades to bear fruit.

And very little good to show for it other than a few symphonic poems and some fantasy novels posing as historical novels.
