As for the argument that it actually worsened (chiefly because Taliban law-and-order was replaced with warlord lawlessness), I best let Afghan women make the argument -- three links to RAWA stories:

A July 2005 article describes the situation with focus on women who were/remain/newly come to refugee camps.
An October 2005 article deconstructs an upbeat article in the Seattle Times about the last 'elections' there.
Finally, the 2006 International Women's Day communique describes the current situation and dishes out accusations in strong language.
