For examples of technology moving jobs in earlier times, I guess the best place to look is the Industrial Revolution. The difference with manufacturing is that generally people have to move to the jobs. A similar pattern is happening with the industrial revolution in China with similar environmental consequences. Telecommunications and services make it possible to actually move the jobs to where the people already are.
