And we arrive at the demise of Verdonk's latest chapter. This was set in motion the moment Verdonk lost the party leadership vote from Rutte. It rolled neatly to its conclusion, almost exactly as I hoped it to be.

Verdonk quits VVD, to stay in parliament

16-10-2007

Rita Verdonk resigned from the right-wing Liberal party (VVD) on Monday night after the party leadership threatened to expel her for refusing to give up her seat in parliament.

The controversial former integration minister was expelled from the parliamentary party last month after continually criticising the party leadership.

Verdonk is to stay on as an MP as a one-woman faction. She is expected to say more about her future plans later this week.

According to the Volkskrant, party leaders held a 15-minute meeting with Verdonk in which she was told either to quit parliament and remain a prominent VVD member or to remain an MP outside the party.

Rutte and Verdonk have decimated the VVD. The drawback: the shift to the extreme right by Wilders.

What will be next next is what concerns me. The air is rife that Verdonk will create her own party. The more competition for uber buffoon Wilder, and the more fragmentation at the extreme right, the better.

So, neither VVD nor D66 are doing all that well. Things are not looking up for liberalism.
