We don't seem to have any "photos as usual" yet... so here are some flowers, taken this summer at the National Garden outside the US Botanic Garden conservatory.

Hmmm.  Those seem to have turned out awfully big, even though I processed them using exactly the same settings as the photos below.  Sorry....

Don't worry. It's the width that counts, not the depth.

A photo which was supposed to be in a series I'm making for school. The idea is to portray a person by three images; one is a portrait and the other two can be anything, as long as they convey something of the person. I showed this one to the teacher and he said "boring, not interesting, too literal." But I kind of like the photo anyway. (I'm always being told that I'm taking the assignments too literally and not using enough of my imagination.)

Portrait series, picture 2 or 3

I think it is a great photo. I like the simplicity. Why not be literal sometimes?  It's such a subjective subject to study. I think the most you can do is develop your style (as well as trying others but ultimately it is about the way you interact with the environment through the camera lens surely?) What does your teacher want, what kind of photos do they praise in others?

Well, this teacher is kind of hard to understand. He tends to change his opinion from time to time (I once had a series of three photos I showed him. He told me to ditch numbers 1 and 3 and keep number 2. The next week he accidentally re-evaluated the same photos and told me to ditch number 2 and keep 1 and 3... and no, it was not a slip or a language problem). He likes modern, abstract, out of focus stuff.. gritty street photos, stuff like that, but also sometimes these modern, simplistic, flat photos of typical Dutch houses standing in the typical Dutch scenery, for example, stuff I find somewhat boring.

I'm a very literalminded person and do not consider myself an artist. My wish is to become a documentary/journalistic photographer. Some of my teachers are more geared towards "artistic" photography. Finding my style is a "work in progress" and will be for a while..

Ah, I find that kind of inconsistency irritating. Today you tell me I am great and tomorrow you tell me I am not, just because of how you are feeling from one day to the next...

Well, to me that means you should trust yourself and I hope you don't get disheartened too much when your tutor gives unconstructive criticism.

Maybe have a go at doing a photodiary/documentary in your preferred style - or use ET to explore styles.  If you have time, I'd love to see what you come up with. And that reminds me, I am long overdue a travelogue...

tzt most of the great photographers became that way because they developed a style of their own not what some teacher said should be their style.  Be yourself.

That person in the corner of the bottom photo is pointing in the wrong direction. How very silly.

Goodness!  I was pretty certain I was the only person on this site who was into airshows.  As a former member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, I am curious--why were YOU at an airshow?

I'm not into air shows at all, especially military shows. But I was visiting my sister in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. When I'm there she thinks it's wrong for me to sit around looking at palm trees so I have to move a bit. I like to take photos now so I had my choice of an arts and crafts fair in West Palm Beach or the air show in Stuart. I chose the latter because I thought it would test my photographic ability. I have a lot of other photos from the air show including a faux  Camp Liberty where they were trying to recruit suckers to die in Iraq. I you like I could post some of these photos on my Picasa web site for you and Elco B. My photos from the air and space museum in Dulles, Va. are already posted there.http://picasaweb.google.com/lenporyles/AirAndSpaceMuseumAtDullesAirport

There's a lot of atmosphere in that shot, it's a really good one. The shadows make the shot, I think.
