A photo which was supposed to be in a series I'm making for school. The idea is to portray a person by three images; one is a portrait and the other two can be anything, as long as they convey something of the person. I showed this one to the teacher and he said "boring, not interesting, too literal." But I kind of like the photo anyway. (I'm always being told that I'm taking the assignments too literally and not using enough of my imagination.)

I think it is a great photo. I like the simplicity. Why not be literal sometimes?  It's such a subjective subject to study. I think the most you can do is develop your style (as well as trying others but ultimately it is about the way you interact with the environment through the camera lens surely?) What does your teacher want, what kind of photos do they praise in others?

Well, this teacher is kind of hard to understand. He tends to change his opinion from time to time (I once had a series of three photos I showed him. He told me to ditch numbers 1 and 3 and keep number 2. The next week he accidentally re-evaluated the same photos and told me to ditch number 2 and keep 1 and 3... and no, it was not a slip or a language problem). He likes modern, abstract, out of focus stuff.. gritty street photos, stuff like that, but also sometimes these modern, simplistic, flat photos of typical Dutch houses standing in the typical Dutch scenery, for example, stuff I find somewhat boring.

I'm a very literalminded person and do not consider myself an artist. My wish is to become a documentary/journalistic photographer. Some of my teachers are more geared towards "artistic" photography. Finding my style is a "work in progress" and will be for a while..

Ah, I find that kind of inconsistency irritating. Today you tell me I am great and tomorrow you tell me I am not, just because of how you are feeling from one day to the next...

Well, to me that means you should trust yourself and I hope you don't get disheartened too much when your tutor gives unconstructive criticism.

Maybe have a go at doing a photodiary/documentary in your preferred style - or use ET to explore styles.  If you have time, I'd love to see what you come up with. And that reminds me, I am long overdue a travelogue...

tzt most of the great photographers became that way because they developed a style of their own not what some teacher said should be their style.  Be yourself.
