Taken in Venice at night but my tripod isn't up to it. I bought a new one yesterday which is rock solid.

Ah, but it's beautiful! Love the colors and the light (and also the lack of light in the upper right corner).

Thanks tzt, I liked the colours on the water too but can't help feeling it isn't the best composition possible.  I think that because Venice is such a stunning place I don't feel it is possible to do it enough justice with a camera!

Lovely photo.  I have one of Venice, the Grand Canal, take years ago but it's much darker than yours (no tripod - I used a bridge to support the camera.  For some reason, I like these long exposure shots.

I enjoy playing about with long exposure shots too, that's why I've invested in a properly decent tripod because I kept getting annoyed by how flimsy my old was one when you need the shutter open for some time.

Funny thing about tripods.  I have several, but my best one is a fairly heavy aluminum Manfrotto with a head almost as heavy as the legs - rock solid though.  I've never taken it on a long trip. Well one day I was strolling through an airport and you know how one has a tendency to take a second look at persons carrying  photo equipment just to see what they have.  Spied this tiny tiny Japanese girl/lady carrying a photo backpack with a huge tripod attached.  I was so ashamed at how totally lazy I've become!

If I can work out how to attach my tripod to the bag without making myself a menace to public safety every time I turn around then I'll carry mine with me whenever I specifically set off to take photos.  Even in daylight there are times when you decide to use longer exposures (I love my ND grad filters).

But if I didn't have something specific in mind and plenty of time to spend then I'd take a lighter one.

I always take a tripod, usually a light one though.  The light tripod is adequate for my TLR medium format camera and small digital, but it will not hold a full sized SLR like my F100 and long lens.  Besides camera duty, the tripod makes a nice towel rack!

This Venice at night photo was taken in about 1973 with a 35mm Yashica range finder camera, purchased in  1971.  When I was in Vienna a few years ago, I visited the "Leica Store" and was surprised to see this exact model Yashica camera on display among the vintage  Leicas and Contax cameras (in a glass display case no less.) Apparently the Yashica was produced shortly after Carl Zeiss passed away and Yashica purchased the Contax name along with the specs for and right to produce its Zeiss brand lenses.  My Yashica and lens cost about $50.00 new, and it still functions quite well.

We are over the re-secularised Catholic festivity used to visit cemeteries in Central Europe. Three not too good photos:

1 November (All Saints') evening falls on a Catholic cemetery in a village, the multitude of candles begins to take over (unfortunately, I we were half an hour early for real night shots):

On the road separating the Catholic and the Calvinist cemeteries, both of which receive maximum traffic at this time, sweets sellers set up shop:

An image from a local cemetery I made an hour ago:

My first crappy attempt at a digital sky photo:

This is Perseus, with Algenib (α Persei) at center. The red arrow points at comet 17P/Holmes. This comet is now far away from the Sun, but, most probably due to a collision, burst up from 24 October -- brightening a million times, growing a coma larger than Jupiter. It is easily visible with the naked eye, check it out!

I'm a bit late and have forgotten which photos I've shown and which not.. Haven't had time for anything except school work for a while.

Twilight on the patio. I spotted a reference to the Finnish flag and, in a burst of post-prandial patriotism, came up with this black velvet abstract. It wouldn't work without the tree.

Welcome to the Photoblog. I can't see your photos too well because I'm temporarily on dialup. From, what I can see, however, they look great.

The second from the top (the black-and-white) especially draws my eye. Very enigmatic in the way we don't see the face. The casual clothing of the woman juxtaposed with the stylish, but rather stark decor makes it even stronger. I get an urge that the person poised in the chair doesn't want to be where she's sitting.

Wow.

I've noticed before that the screen I use on my Internet computer considerably darkens images compared to other screens... Oh well - it sure gave a good effect.

What did you do to the picture to allow me (or everyone?) to see what was happening in the dark?

Even so, the poise of the person remains very tense and captivating... It doesn't convey (to me) a person who's relaxing... Now the bookshelf is visible the classy effect is reduced - I previously considered looking at a fancy hotel lobby!

Picture is dark and effective because of it. Dodo just put more light in it through computer software...but it spoiled everything. Yes pictures can "lie"...because they are products of what person making photo is seeing. That's why we can make photos of the same object and they can be totally different...

That's why we can make photos of the same object and they can be totally different...

Exactly.. We had this assignment in school where we had to take a picture of a white egg on a white background. We were allowed to use only one light source (and it had to be the softbox), no effects, no props, no nothing. Sounds boring, huh? A white egg on a white paper? But still, everyone's photo was different. And many were actually quite interesting.

I used gamma correction. One part of why she sits as she does is that the telephone she uses is a cord telephone, the cord is visible above. But her gait I think only shows that she wants to keep her talk private -- fearing her mother's indiscretion :-)
