How are things?

Uhg, I spent the day in bed yesterday feeling miserable...

It's finally become cold here, and wouldn't you know, the heat in my bathroom stopped working.  So I spent the afternoon entertaining a repairman guest - too weird to lie in bed sick when workmen are over...   Then I watched some movies: Broken English, which was a bad idea, although I adore Parker Posey.  But not only was it a film with few redeeming qualities, it was also freaking me out that I had way toooo much in common with the main character.  So after I got over that I watched Moscow doesn't believe in tears.  Much better choice.  I can't relate to any of those people...

Also, I was bored and decided to paint a stool.  It was going fine until I realized my white cat was sporting a smurfish blue moustache and licking her chops.  I called the emergency vet number and they wanted to charge me like $100 before they would tell me if the paint was going to poison her.  They wanted my credit card number, not to pay for treatment, but to pay for information leading to the decision to treat her.  I figured cats get into nonsense all the time.  All the great artists had cats.  She'd be ok.  Idiot poison control extortionists be damned.

She's fine.

Also, this is weird.  I was home sick and got an automated phone call informing my someone was shot and killed in the vicinity of my job.  Well, I think a lot of people are shot around there, but this was not a poor black local kid.  So now there's a huge to do about the whole thing.  Everyone's scared and outraged.  Oddly, these are the same people who seem to think this kind of violence is normal and just part of living in the city whenever I bring up the fact that I live somewhere where a girl can walk home by herself at night.  They take some weird pride in their unsafe neighborhood.  It's really messed up.  I don't get it...

Also, the absolutely only thing on the news is this psychokiller who has apparently been killing his wives.  Man is nuts.

What else?  Thanksgiving is coming up.  I really have no plans.  For perhaps the 1st time in my life.  Which means I don't have to play little orphan girl to someone else's charitable pseudo family with their own weird food traditions.  (Velveeta clam dip.  Never. Again.)  Greatly looking forward to it.

And there seems to be an excellent article in the eXile but I can't get the damned thing to print...  Sigh.  The Russian Election stuff is pissing me off.  Crap like this from the MT:

This truly is a strange campaign. Only two short weeks ago, you could have said that these elections were a foregone conclusion, with no possibility of an upset. And now it turns out, would you believe, that it's possible to vote against Putin retaining his authority and, instead, vote for the Union of Right Forces.

You'd believe it if you'd bothered to listen to me for the past month, idiot.  Gah.  Sucks....

Maybe I should have stayed home under the blankets...

VELVEETA CLAM DIP?

Actually, don't expand on that. I don't want to know.

Yes, for some reason people feel the holidays give them an excuse to put just about anything in their mouths...

Though to be fair, another "family" once did an English affair complete with scotch eggs & "toad in the hole" (looks even ruder than it sounds)...

There's a French bistro around here doing a prix fixe carryout Thanksgiving dinner.  I'm very tempted...

But is it for real? I was going to commiserate with you over your bad day, but then I read about the VCD and it so far surpasses any bug, illness, cold bathroom, that I think it should be getting you messages of horrified sympathy from all around the world. Even if you'd eaten the blue paint yourself, or you'd eaten the cat, could it be worse than Velveeta Clam Dip?

Come to think of it, though, it could be Velveeta Clam-in-the-Hole...

I am really loving this.  Was ex-boyfriend's favorite dish.  LOL.

It really didn't taste horrific, because, as anyone who has eaten Velveeta knows, if you put it in anything, it's really all you can taste.  Fake cheese taste.  Not as bad as ... well, it must better than something.  The other thing is that much drinking is involved at this holiday gathering, so that at some point you are just shoving food into your mouth to slow the alcohol poisoning...

But... I don't understand.  If you say "cheese," you by definition cannot mean either Velveeta or American.  These things are not cheese.

That raises a good question.  What could you call that which is commonly referred to as "parmesan" but is not actually Parmigiano-Reggiano?  Besides "crap?" Are there any other products that are universally known by a region's name, even when they are not produced there?

Yorkshire pudding, Scotch eggs, Battenberg cake, Florentine pastries...

Although all of these are different to American food because they're actually edible, and not a product of better living through organic chemistry.

Cities, nations, regions are cracking down on the misuse of names. You can no longer call a drink "champagne" unless it's produced there. There's an ongoing contention over the the use of the word "Vodka" at the moment.

In Italy there's Gorgonzola, Parma ham.

The region of Tuscany has taken things a step further. Images of Tuscany can no longer be used in commercials that do not specifically refer to Tuscany. The well known "Mulino Bianco" "White Mill" cookies had to take a picture of a Tuscan windmill off their logo.

In 2002, the FDA warned Kraft that Velveeta was being sold with packaging that described it as a "pasteurized processed cheese food," which the FDA claimed was false ("cheese food" must contain at least 51% cheese). Velveeta is now sold as a "cheese product," using a term for items that contain less than 51% cheese.[1]

Heh, it all depends how hungry you are.

I came out of a 5 day hike with only some Velveeta [which doesn't spoil] and a slice of, by then, rancid raisin bread.

If anyone were to ask me what my most memorable meals may have been, the Velveeta rancid bread sandwich would rank pretty high ; )

Oh, and if it weren't enough that there were 3 shootings here yesterday and there is some homicidal maniac out in the suburbs...

I think there is a ... Serbian?  Bosnian?  gang in my neighborhood.  They hang out on the street corners late at night smoking cigarettes in their hoodies acting all tough, like.  Some of them are pretty cute.  I actually don't know where they are from.  Bulgaria?  Are there Bulgarian gangs?
