Deliberately out of focus. I like the colours.

Esther has an amazing talent for seeing images in terms of frames - the mark of a true artist ;-) Most people believe that the mental proscenium framing has to be frozen during the process of recording. It can happen afterwards by cropping, BUT the image is recorded with that latent possibility.

What you exclude from a frame is as important as that which is included. Esther's talent is in understanding this and yet still remaining free and direct.

Thanks for your great compliment Sven. I'll show it to estHer later but she won't know what we're talking about. It's nice to have a "gift" like she does.
I was showing my wife your comment and showed her the photo of the guitar two photos down which I had cropped and then I showed her the original. She said I shouldn't have cropped it. What do you think?
Maybe I just can't mess with a real artist's work.

Here's the original.

Well, I wouldn't have cropped it as closely as you did:I might have taken about 10% off the bottom to emphasize the texture of the denser patches of leaves but that would be the most I'd do. I think it balances the shape of the thing a bit.

This is getting interesting. I could make a separate diary on this photo alone called "Crop this Photo?"

I'd like to know how Esther wanted it framed. It's her photograph.  Personally, I think her camera framing is fantastic - she balances a person and a guitar and all that stands for, with dead, lightweight leaves. Purposeful walking with randomness. For me, it is not about people (otherwise there would be a face), it is just about weights - and a rather ruthless play with figure/ground ambiguity.

But I am sure Esther doesn't need any of this analysis - she is clearly the photo at the time it is taken.

Well that put me in my place... ;-)

You know, the creativity of young people is the only thing which gives me hope. And there is a very fine balance between offering help and screwing up their vision. Many fine artists have been destroyed by regimented teaching, but also many fine artists have never seen the light of day because of their own misguided desire to conform.

What can we oldies do? Well I could say that we just need to be there like a reliable tap to be turned on when cool, reliable, refreshing liquidity is needed at a moment's notice. But, as you and I know. it's just about being there and being loving.

Hi Sven. I preferred my original because I like the guitar in the upper right of the photo. Thank you so much for your compliment ! :D

Esther. The perfect answer ;-)

One day people will ask you 'But why do you like it up there in the right hand corner?'

Don't fall into that trap until you finish school. After that you'll be able to give them some explanation that makes them happy. But you'll still know that you just like it up there in the right hand corner. Keep that to yourself ;-)

This is the secret of life.

I also liked the original more, with not even a 10% cut, because of those apparent swirls. (There, I gave myself an explanation. I should be an art critic.)

Yep - the original had a bit more pertinent information in it than LEP's version, which was cropped for compositional reasons alone (sorry LEP). LEP thought the leaves were just a tiled background ie decorative. You need the perspective depth of the tarmac  to understand what the leaves are and how they got there.

There's a hell of a lot of information in the leaves ;-)

Everyone IS an art critic. It just needs the honesty and a bit of contextual understanding

I hate to complicate this fascinating discussion about life and leaves and swirls but I just found this photo on my hard drive taken 20 seconds earlier than the other one, that both estHer and I prefer.

In the original Esther framing, there are some important details. Only 3 fingers are used to carry the acoustic guitar in a  bag. The guitar neck points down at some leaves with almost a magnetic attraction. There's another 2 metres of leaves in the distance.
