and my wife's garden from the side of the house. The large pine tree on the left was felled in October and I showed photos of that in an October photo blog. It had gotten so tall that we were afraid it would fall on the house in a storm.

This scene has a timeless quality to me. For my eyes, the colors in your photo, aside from the lower left hand corner, almost look as if the picture was taken 70 years ago.

What a lovely place LEP - I envy the calm you must have there - but 60 kms from Paris - though I know you've done your Montmartre time :-) In Paris last year I had almost the best of both worlds; a very quiet little pavilion in the courtyard of a block of flats in Port D'Orleans - from which I could be beside the Seine at St Michel in 15 mins by a metro, running about every 4 mins.

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner - that I moved to Nice.

That's the trade off Ted and that's why I took a little room in Paris. But you can buy this house (150 sq. meters) with 1200 sq. meters of land for about the same price as a 60 sq. meter apartment on an average residential street in Paris. With two kids that's a major consideration.
My personal tragedy is that I didn't know I was allergic to the country until after I moved here. But I found some cortisone injections that work. It's funny. As soon as I breathed the diesel infested air of Paris I was better.

"Allergic to the country" - that's rough! - especially amongst us eco-freaks :-) Actually Nice is one of the most polluted cities in France, despite being on the coast. All the traffic pollution is made worse by all the sunlight - a mixed blessing.

The Porte d'Orléans metro line actually has a peak frequency of 105 seconds... (and yes, metro drivers are supposed to keep their schedule down to the second.)
