Hey, Grandma Moses started late!
by LEP (rafifoon@yahoo.com) on Fri Nov 30th, 2007 at 04:20:15 AM EST
This is a photo I took from my plane, of another plane landing. It was taken a few weeks ago at 8 a.m. at Washington National Airport  as we were about to take off for Florida.

Believe it or not, this is a very old and famous hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, called The Breakers, where some of my rich cousins stayed when I was there for a family reunion. One night there would pay for one month of my studio in Paris including internet and electric.
Everything is hand painted, and was done about 80 years ago. Here's a photo of the ceiling, but it's slightly out of focus.

Aha. I had my Euro-blinkers on and couldn't figure out where it might be. There's a religious look about it but the window in the first photo didn't fit.

Interesting tint. Is that black and white film?

yes - ilford, FP4 or HP5, most probably HP5. Its a scan of a paper print, and the tint most probably come from when I scanned the shot in 2003 (and forgetting to convert the file to black an white)..

Oh you had a Lomo?  I am so tempted to try to find one and have a go at working with that. I love the 'look' they give.

Restoring the 1862 church built by Norwegian immigrants to Minnesota.  This is no longer an active church but is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Thorstein Veblen's parents are buried in the cemetery.

The timbers supporting the steeple had rotted away so the structure had to be rebuilt.  The pioneers didn't have a crane.

We were VERY organized and efficient in rebuilding the steeple and thought we had saved a bunch of money.  However, when we poured new footings, we discovered the floor had been destroyed by rot and various critters.  So we had to spend the money anyway.

The steeple as seen this afternoon.  There is still some siding / flashing work to do.

Thanks LEP

Actually, I am not sure how I get roped into these sorts of projects.  BTW, this is the picture we are supposed to match.  No I didn't take it--we guess it was taken in early June of 1876.

Actually, Italy would have been my second guess.  So, it's probably the one you know of.  The photo was taken during the 1970s and I took so many photos back then.  We lived in the UK and spent every available vacation day on the Continent, except for short visits to Wales several times a year.

While in Sidney, we took the train to near by Manly Beach. As we sat to rest on a street leading down to the beach, I noticed this interesting little kebob shop with living quarters above. I had to struggle a bit with the lighting to get all of the tones of the building in without blowing out the sky, but digital is wonderful.

...which overlooks my hometown -- but you don't see any of that on the following picture (made from the obsevation tower), only the silver stripe of the Danube:

(Both on the North side.) My dog before I ordered her back from the thin ice of a miniature lake on a mountain saddle:

Back in the city, there was an incredible third-sky red Sunset, I have seen such an orgy of colours at most 3-4 times before. But it is short bliss: must have lasted less than a minute, by the time I pulled out the camera and made some hasty adjustments, it began to fade away...
