In Hungary, tomorrow was to see the beginning of an open-ended general strike. This after a total failure of negotiations, including negotiations about what should constitute minimal railway service during the strike.

Two union confederations (one clearly right-aligned, the other talking to the right but also getting support from a government-critical wing of the Socialist party) pursue it, for three causes: healthcare 'reform' (moving towards partial privatisation), retirement system 'reform' (would mean a cut of 8-10% for new retirees) and closure of 38 railway branchlines.

However, after unit heads began to send locomotive drivers on vacation without announcement time, and call up drivers at home whether they want to participate in the strike, the participating railway union announced a start at 22h today.

I wonder how this will be reported in your media compared to the French  strikes lately (or if it will be reported at all).

I'll keep a lookout.  The TUC sent out a press release backing the French strikes, if I remember rightly so we may see something if they do the same for Hungary.

I wonder if we will get soem right wing commentary on why the UK must keep reducing the power fo the unions.
