Thanks Nanne, but almost 10 hours for a trip that now can be done in 31/2 hours, including 3 hours waiting to change the train in the middle of the in an empty train station in Germany is not my idea of having fun. I must be getting old. :-)

I don't know why there are no direct trains at night to Switzerland, all night trains include changing in Karlsruhe.

Yeah, it's strange. I'm coming directly from Berlin on the night train and it's almost as quick as from Zürich.

Night trains have to last over the night : you don't want to arrive at your destination at 3.30 am, do you ?

Definitely. But you can play with the time of departure. My train is leaving at 21:00, but you could also leave at, say, 00:30.

There's also the need to be able to have a full night sleep, which is why it is leaving early... Also, some train stations pactically close after a certain time. Very few intercity trains leave Paris after 10 pm...

When that happens with a sleeper, they usually place it in a quiet siding to let passengers sleep on till a more reasonable hour.
