For some reason, I had the idea that he had refused a knighthood because of his Scottish Nationalism, but apparently he sees no contradiction and claims (see his website) his knighthood was "delayed" until 2000 (I must not have been paying attention). Wikipedia has the he-said-she-said on the knighting.
