Reactions to Wilder's statement range from angry to resigned. A spokesman for home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst said the police are already allowed to shoot if the situation warrants it. The right-wing Liberal party (VVD), which sides with Wilders on immigration issues, said it was an 'idiotic proposal', while the Dutch police union said Wilders was quite wrong if he thought police would want to use their weapons in such a way. And Gerrit van de Kamp, chairman of the police federation ACP commented: 'If he [Wilders] wants a banana republic so much, he should go away and find one.'
