I was thinking since that maybe he doesn't mean an identified volcanic erruption, but maybe a sediment layer,
and
his specifying of the tropics as its location may be a meteorologist's speculation based on the Pinaturbo effect.

I suspect

the date is based on an ash layer found in ice core(s). A sediment layer already means you have a vague idea of the location; you're nearer to the source. "Tropics" is a bit too vague.
