El Pais:
El aborto se queda en lo privado

El Pais:
Abortion remains private
(31/07/2007)
Only 3% of voluntary intrssuptions of pregnancy are practiced in public hospitals.- No public heatlth service doctors practices abortions in six Autonomous Communities.- Provision is privatised in those regions
22 years have passed since the depenalisation of abortion in Spain, and voluntary interruptions of pregnancy continue rising: it has gone from 16,000 in 1987 to 90,000 in 2005. However, only 3% of abortions is practised in public hospitals, and six [Autonomous] Communities -Navarra, Extremadura, Murcia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia- have no [hospital] making them. The Autonomous Governments claim that the right [to an abortion] is guaranteed through concertation with private clinics and that the problem is rooted in doctors resorting to the conscientious objection clause. Women going to the public health system often face hurdles making them go directly to private clinics.
Having an abortion in a public hospital can be an odyssey: women lack information in many cases, in others they have to travel hundreds of kilometers to exercise their right and some endureideological anti-abortion speeches from their family doctors. But the biggest problem is rooted in the fact that public hospitals hardly practice voluntary interruptions of pregnancy. The reason? Many doctors, apparently, object.
Can the last politician to go out the revolving door please turn the lights off?
