How was the format for this then?  Do we need to start off with posting guidelines on format for next week?

I was thinking in terms of the October FotoFest that I took part in last year with thumbnails and a bit of blurb on the photo.

Depends whether people would like to have larger images on the diary posts to avoid the need for clicking on every one to see it properly.

If you right click on the photos posted in this diary and go to properties, you can see the file size in kb. I guess that some people are unclear as to how to reduce file size as opposed to reducing picture width.

So do we have thumbnails for all pictures posted or do we make clear the guidlelines on pixel width and file size?

We really need to investigate how many people have trouble with the uploads. The difference between 80 Kb and 300 Kb is peanuts for broadband, unless one is ridiculously multitasking.

I'd prefer to have to max 600 w as standard - it is big enough to appreciate the picture without going to a larger version. People can post smaller if the picture doesn't merit the full size.

Let's continue with wednesday photoblogging and see what comes up.

I'd rather see your Oktober fest as a diary - even if there's not much text. A sort of photo essay. I consider such diaries and, of course, the RG extravaganzas, as an essential part of ET. Sharing feelings and experiences are as important as sharing information and opinions.

I'd also like to see more ET generated video and I will make a note to self to do so ;-)

People on dialup or slow broadband can still enjoy the diary by setting their comment display preferences to dynamic minimal which will collapse all the comments to a title line and allow (using javascript) individual comments to be loaded witha click of the mouse.

This has been a public-service announcement by a non-gnome.

That should be in the user guide ;-)

Sorry, I can't help you with that.

It would be useful to know if there's anyone who hasn't been able to read this diary because of limited bandwidth. (Best asked in an open thread and not here, to make sure they can read the question.)

Being ruthless, I'd guess there's a solid majority on broadband. And there isn't much that can be done do for those on dial-up because anything bigger than tiny thumbnails is going to be too much for them. (Never mind those using mobiles.)

So I'd be happy with 600 pixels for the maximum dimension, and a size of 50-100Kb.

Re: content - we could maybe have a very loose theme announced ahead of time, so people who have the time and inclination could take some new photos. (Or pick out some favourite older ones.)

Max 600 px wide, and under 100Kb, was what I was suggesting.

I know, I was agreeing.

TBG. Any thematic suggestions for the coming weeks?

I reduced all my photos to less than 100 kb except for the first one to kick off the blog. (There is a way to do it on Picassa but it is not obvious.) Even that first one had already been reduced by Picassa from 2.4 mb to 329 kb when I uploaded it.
I don't mind at all to click on the photo to get to the larger size. But on Picassa Web Albums you can't see the original photo, only the first reduction by Picassa. Can you see the original on Photobucket?
You know, I'm really faking all this technical talk. It's like a combination of Greek and Chinese for me.

If you would like to originate next week's diary, with some guidelines,(perhaps after consulting with afew) I would be most pleased.

Hi LEP - I think I might first do a general diary about visuals, with a poll, to assess opions out there. I don't think anyone would dispute that visuals add a lot to ET - and, as afew pointed out, we don't want to lose that. My own feeling is that some attention paid to visuals,  whether by photoblogging or whatever, will increase the use of visuals on ET.

It is easy to post visuals, including video - once you know how, and are not afraid of making mistakes. But it is not always a fear of technical competence and knowledge that deters people from contributing visuals. Sometimes text is too easy, and we can all be lazy. Sometimes it is a feeling that pictures don't make a point - they are not part of the argument. To me, they are. eg Laurent's fabulous nature pictures are surely part of what we are arging about here? A better life, more responsibility, more caring, more passion etc etc.

And pictures of and by EstHer are another good reminder of why we need to argue about them.

You know, I agree with you that it would be nice to post our photos without any more reduction-say around 350kb.
So perhaps you could take a poll to ascertain how many on ET are stuck with dialup. ( I didn't see anything in the users' guide re:  poll taking.)
I would then be very pleased if you and In Wales and afew and TBG and migeru and whoever else wanted to join in would formulate any necessary technical guidelines. That stuff is way beyond my competence. It's already quite an achievement for me to copy and paste on the computer.

As far as I'm concerned (and I'm not, in this photo blog, though I like to post pics elsewhere), I suggested 600 px maximum width, and under 100 KB. (Or less eg thumbnails if you like).

This is not a management ruling and frankly you can all do what you fucking well like.
