From french wikipedia and various sources:

The most active subway line of Paris (the "1") carries 160 millions passenger a year using now some MP89 720 passengers (242 seated) per train.
For Tramway in Paris (Citadis 302) I found 213 passengers (48 seated)
Double Bus can take up to 160 passengers (model?), 4.5 times less than subway, single bus us around 80 passenger maximum.

For pollution, bus can be electric, french EDF has a nice
PDF with various models and cities using them:

Yes, we had a discussion of trolley buses here a while ago ... but the US Federal push for BRT instead of electric light rail is for diesel bus systems.
