relates today how both the military and diplomatic establishments in France are aghast at Sarkozy and Kouchner's martial declarations. Amongst the items to note:

  • Kouchner's declaration is widely understood as meaning that France will participate to the (increasingly likely) US-UK attack on Iran;

  • Sarkozy intends to bring France back into the integrated military command of NATO;

  • Sarkozy has agreed with the White House to do without the UN (thus his - so far unsuccessful - attempts to bring in the other Europeans on his line);

  • the number of French planes based in Kandahar (Afghanistan) and Dushambe (Tadjikistan) has been increased, and these are "fully operational" and within range for the kinds of missions that would be expected over Iran.

(I'll crosspost this to the other diary)

They have every right to be aghast. Being put under the control of US military must be frightening. Just think of all that friendly fire coming the way of the french soldiers.
