Do you understand that I feel compelled to take notes in order to keep track of my thoughts in order to put together some kind of coherent response to these diaries of yours? Hmmm?

I would like to start off by saying that unlike nearly everybody else, I was not swilling champagne and eating cakes over the Silly Season, I was hard at work on my thesis from the moment I woke up until I went to bed (possibly stopping for lunch and maybe a mid afternoon nap, cups of tea, dinner, ice cream...)  My Christmas break largely consisted of helping my aunt with paperwork and tidying the flat, although we did take a break for Doctor Who and a cup of eggnog. And then since you've been in hiding from reality, I've been back at work full time and still writing the goddamn thesis, punctuated by pestering from colleagues and family saying "have you handed the thesis in yet?"

Now where was I? My notes. Uh.

Ah yes, funny you should mention prostitutes because today I was at a talk by Amnesty International on their report on human trafficking in Wales.  Quite shocking the finds were from that.  At least 60 trafficked women in Cardiff brought over from Eastern Europe and sold as sex slaves.  According the the Police force that covers Denbighshire and Powys (largely rural) "there's no human trafficking here". Right, Yeah.

And as for feminists. I have a hoodie that says ffeminist (it's Welsh), it was part of a women's rights campaign in NUS when I was an officer.  I'm all wrong for civil service because I couldn't be an activist any more so I'm glad I'm back with the unions. I am also in the 'I can be a feminist and look good naked' camp. I also think men can be feminists.

I'm reading every freaking word of yours ok?  What kind of bridge are you talking about? Because I can build bridges out of lego or tubes of paper and sellotape much quicker than I can get through these diaries of yours.

I don't have much of an opinion on Putin and don't really see the drool factor in the man so I'll leave that to you to discuss.

My aloofness, Bridget Jones-esque got me a fair way through the Big Brother auditions, because I didn't actually care. I guess the biggest election I won was the one I hadn't been intending to stand for but did in the end and won on a landslide.  I did have a comedy opponent who in her election speech told a joke that involved sausages and punchline around biting a man's cock off.  She slunk away from conference right after we confirmed that she'd lost horribly (she was the only one who voted for her) and left a note with Steering Committee to apologise if she'd offended any vegetarians with her 'joke'. So, Hillary Clinton doesn't want to do that.

James Bond goes with TV and bank holidays and my Dad rubbing his hands with glee as 007 ends up in the back of another boat, with another woman, um, drinking martini or something.  Bleh. I don't watch those bits.  The man with the metal teeth, Jaws used to give me nightmares.

Those Russian Dolls will probably give me nightmares now.

And the more films with Johnny Depp in, the better.

Don't mind me now, I have thesis to write and Torchwood is back on telly at 9.  I love Cardiff spotting. I love cheesy Doctor Who spin offs.

Enough information?

I didn't know the "vegetarian" story. It's hilarious!

It was. I can't remember the actual joke but the entire scenario was so out there we still laugh about it years on.

~Good.  I appreciate the effort.  Have you chosen your 4 books for the Russian Reading Challenge yet?

~You spent the holidays writing your thesis?  Wait.  It's not that I demand a lot from my readers; you're just a masochist.

~"Funny?"  Really?

~I'm a feminist, and I think men can be feminists, but I don't believe you can be a union organizer and look good naked.

~(masochist)

~You build bridges out of lego or tubes of paper and sellotape?  Do people in Wales drive HotWheels cars?

~Wow, so you're saying I've totally failed, huh?  Not even much of an opinion about Putin?!  Like, you just don't care?!  But ... you still read every word of these diaries?  That's sick.

~I don't understand that story at all.  I don't really know anything Welsh politics ("comedy opponent", steering committee?).  What does this have to do with Hillary Clinton?

~I only recently began to like Bond films.  Around the time Daniel Craig began to star in them.

~And I didn't show you the dolls with the children popping out of them!!!

~I can't tell you how pissed I am they are cancelling award shows this year when Depp's nominated!  Grrrr!  Bloody writers' union!

~I don't have much of an opinion on Doctor Who and don't really see the drool factor in Cardiff  so I'll leave that to you to discuss!  :)

I've overlooked the Russian Reading Challenge... point me in the direction of a link please. I have already read Night Watch, Day Watch and Twilight Watch (and if you haven't you really should) - do they count?

I'm not a masochist, I just preferred to spend as much time as possible doing more enjoyable things than thesis writing.  I produce my best work when under intense and urgent pressure to get things done and that mindset just didn't kick in until December. I also have a busy job which hasn't left much spare time for a life let alone thesis writing in recent months.

Yeah alright, funny coincidence, not a funny ha ha way but just, you know.

I may have a bit more cellulite lurking around but still...

(Am not)

Haven't you ever suffered team building days?  Where they put you in with a group of incompetant, huge-egoed managers and couldn't give a shit admin staff and make you do pointless 'tasks' all in the spirit of bonding with colleagues you would usually never wish to talk to.

Yeah I don't care. I try to care but I can't bring myself to. He doesn't offend me but I'm not his second greatest fan either.

It wasn't Welsh politics, it was student politics and I was the President. And still only the third female president in the history of the organisation and the only officer in 15 years who has made the admin woman smile.

What's so good about Daniel Craig?

I'm glad.  That would have been a bit surreal.

Hurrah for the writers union.  In a world with as much money as American TV and film, the writers wouldn't totally kill off the profits by getting paid fairly for their work.  And quite a few have reached agreements now.

And I will. Doctor Who. Cardiff. Yay!

Russian Reading Challenge 2008

Wow, apparently this has caught on like wildfire on the internets...  No, those don't count.  Unless you are going to read them again.  You have to read at least 4 books this year.

I haven't even picked my 4 yet...

This is what is so great about Daniel Craig:

I ought to read war and Peace just to know where my name came from but it's a bit long. Are there any very short or easy ones (like Spot the Dog) that I could read?

There are novellas like Death and the Penguin & Moscow to the end of the line.

There are short stories by Chekhov and Gogol.

There are poems by Pushkin and Akhmatova.
