That second picture, uncompressed, might have enough information on the direction panels to find which city it is...

Would it be Saumur?

Is it? I visited Saumur on a school trip when I was 12.  Is it on the Reine?  There was a Da Vinci museum there. Saumur is where I first tried roll mop herrings (to impress my teacher who was trying to get us to eat new things but all the other kids ordered chips).  I loved them and have never found such nice ones in the UK, even on our fresh fish market.

For sure.

Saumur's on the Loire. Hmm. Haven't had a rollmop in ages.

Strike that for sure. Wrong comment.

I tried finding geezer's town, but drew a blank.

I know I know!!! At first sight!!!

Semur-en-Auxois, it's where my favourite Louis de Funès film, Ni vu... Ni connu... was made!

I wouldn't know it without some prior help by the dearly missed Alex/glomp, who helped me identify the filming location ages ago, but that thread must have been deleted.

You're right. As soon as I saw the name, it came back to me. Ivonne agrees.
Incredibly lovely town--but whathehell is a rollmop? Sounds more like a cleaning device than an edible treat.

Thanks to all who helped out.
