Redstar, you're on a roll.  This is hilarious.

I'm not going to bellyache, I'm just going to note that as a registered voter in the District of Columbia, I have no voting representation in Congress, so I only barely count as an American citizen.

And this is not meant to influence your vote in any way, but I would love to send Al Franken to the Senate.  I mean, if I had a Senator, I wouldn't mind it being Al Franken.  Not that I have a Senator or anything, but all I'm saying is that Al Franken would be a good one.  Not that anybody cares about what DC voters think about who should be in the Senate.  Because, you know, we don't have a Senator.

He believes in the sanctity of the secret vote with an intensity that makes him abhor postal ballots, for instance.

I believe in the sanctity of a vote which actually matters and actually aligns, in more than a perfunctory, superficial way, the voter's comprehensive interest with the choices he or she has.

Not seeing that over here in the US, I therefore have a hard time taking the vote all that seriously. But if I could take it seriously, I too would be 100% for the sanctity of the secret ballot.

Please note, however, that caucus votes are most often by show of hands or something similar (grouping together physically also often happening). I've only once run a caucus where we did paper ballots, and then only because the caucus was so overrun with people that this was the most practical way (Democratic caucus, 2004). So the system itself, at least until the general, isn't exactly as sanctified as all that...

Well, postal ballots allow exactly the same possibilities of abusive husbands voting for their wives as the caucuses in Iowa, for example.

And I do happen to live in a place where vote manipulation, and pressure on voters right when they vote (elderly mostly), happen very regularly on local elections. Where social housing access is made easier if you promise to vote for the right person. Postal ballots would have lead to militants "helping" citizens fill them up, 10 years ago in Paris.

OTOH, this diary doesn't give me apoplexy - you have a right to discuss your vote with friends beforehand, as long as the vote itself is secret ! As long as there is no way to verify redstar actually votes for who he has promised, it's not a problem...

Alright yeah, I'm disqualified, but I'd go for Franken. He's about as left leaning as Wellstone was, and like Ventura, he isn't worried about getting paid by his contractor buddies or playing the game due to political careerism (which leads people like Pelosi to roll over). In the same vein he's enough of a name on his own to not have to end up with his policy pinned by corporate donors.

Your user ID must be lower than 4000.

What number are users up to now? (Or are you worried about people getting multiple accounts)

I think it's just over 2400 right now.

Wasn't worried about multiple accounts, but in the (extremely) off-chance some of the partisans at another site signed up and, say, overwhelmingly voted to make me go caucus for Huckabee then vote for Paul, I'd like to have an honorable way out of the wager.

Ain't likely, but with some of the partisan fanatics in the US on the internet, you never know.

Vote your conscience and f*ck the tactics.  If everyone votes tactically nothing ever gets changed.  The longest journey begins with a single step.  You may not be able to change the world all that much, but at least you can be true to yourself.

I once voted tactically in an election on the assumption that my favoured candidate would get in anyway.  Unfortunately, a lot of other people did too, and he ended up not getting elected.  The guy I did vote for sold out soon after....

Regarding Minessota state... well it is easy vote for Al and the reason is tha he is a radio/TV personality,.. and this is what we nee dmore inthe US senate.. to recall that it is all bout theatre.. and facade..

Regarding presidential politics... well.. int he primary mmmmhhh...

Ok I leave it that to another.. I do nto really care. Clinton is gonna win.. so it really does not matter and the go-torture-war-to-islam-burn-inmigrant republicans do not deserve a McCain.

A pleasure

I'd love to see Franken in the Senate, I think he'd bash a few heads together nicely judging by the content of his books.

I'd push for a vote for Edwards/Obama in the presidential contest. Edwards is the key but by the time this primary comes around he might not be in play so the Obama train is preferable to Clinton, who I don't trust.

Cool idea!
