Nice story. I wonder what world demand for pomegranates is, though.

In Khaled Hosseini's "The Kite Runner", Amir and Hassan often hang out after school under a pomegranate tree at the top of a hill near Hassan's house.

Beautiful book, if you haven't read it yet.

Oh, and another Afghan born writer, Atiq Rahimi received the prix Goncourt today in Paris for "Syngue Sabour". The title translates as Stone of Patience.

heh, i just squeezed one to accompany dinner!

the colour is so powerful alone, it's like a tangy blood transfusion going down, puckery sweet.

the ones from italy, or sometimes from spain, (choice available here locally in c. italy) are blander than the ones in hotter countries.

those ones in the istanbul market look mouthwateringly better.

The juice is tasty yet hardly worth the effort to do by hand.  Recently, in the past two or three years, a number of pomegranate juice drinks have turned up on shelves, often mixed with teas, etc. They're ok, some better than others.   They are typically more expensive than other comparable drinks, so there is a "luxury" angle to it.  That should help in the US market as long as they can ratchet prices down now that nobody has any money.

i juice them by hand, like oranges. it's not that hard, the cells break readily, they yield a bit less, but it's more intense, so...

considering they grow in warmer climes, perhaps we'll see more of them, especially as their skin enables them to travel well.

no need for them to be so luxy-pricey, it's probably because not enough peeps know about them.
