Yep.  I bought it on vinyl, because important records should be played on vinyl.  The kids can have their silly mp3s.

It's...um...amazing.  The influences are all pretty clear and pretty wide-ranging.  Everything from classical to Yellow Brick Road-era Elton John to '80s thrash-metal to Marilyn Manson/Trent Reznor industrial.  Nobody's making music like this.

But it doesn't quite hit you on the first play through.  Takes a few to really "get" it.  I didn't care for it at first, but it's steadily grown on me since I came home with it, and it's slowly creeping up to meet my expectations.

And, after ten years of waiting, that's pretty damned impressive.

...adding, and the record doesn't really make sense unless taken as a whole.  The NYT had a really shitty review of it, but I think it's because it looked at songs individually.  It's really one big work.

Except "Madagascar".  "Madagascar" just sucks.  Awful song.

This review was pretty ... good, if that's the right word for it.

Yeah, a friend of mine in New York forwarded that over.  Similar to my take on the record.  And the "Mexican vampire" part was hilarious.
