Women don't 'tolerate' it.  The psychology behind why women are too afraid to report it or challenge it or leave is complex and in no way amounts to excusing violence (although women make excuses, excuses, excuses... but it is out of fear and having normality completely screwed up and they think they can't live without him because they are so worthless and useless and deserve what they get and if they just try a bit harder to please him it will be ok because he loves her really.)

I could take you through my personal experience of growing up with domestic abuse but it wouldn't be appropriate in such a public forum.
