The tendency is to forget that, for all the faults that may be attributed to Saddam, Iraq's government and social structures were some of the most solid in the region, before the country was invaded. -- Infrastructure, education [among the best], scientific and medical research ...

Iraq was reduced to a shambles and now needs 'reconstruction'.

"Our common goal is to contribute to Iraq's success. The EU is therefore ready to engage without delay in this country," says the confidential paper on transatlantic relations discussed on Monday at an informal foreign ministers meeting in Marseille, the German daily reports.

According to diplomats close to the issue, the EU's help is unlikely to be military, but rather in terms of training the Iraqi police and judiciary, with countries such as Germany and Italy already involved in similar programmes.

What do they think they're doing ?

They're trying to appear consequential on the world stage. It seems our elites still have their white man's burden of guilt and feel we need to save Abdul-darkie towelhead from his own primitivism.

Your suggestion makes as much sense as anything, but you're forgetting the oil. The west aren't going to leave that behind and Sarko wants his share too.
