Yo, Economist dipshits:
The economy is not your playground. It is how we eat and cloth ourselves.
The environment is not your garbage dump. It is where we live.
To believe that the 'free' (financialized) market would work in the common interest when its profit demand is most efficiently met by the exploitation of natural and human capital, is the ultimate fairytale.

That said, I wish that the impulse to shore up a variety of industries was strategic and forward looking rather than tactical and reactionary. Rather than subsidies to an unsustainable and damaging fishing industry, transition funds to move those that derive their living from it to a more beneficial sector. Rather than subsidies to soil eroding, over fertilizing agricultural excess production, funds to transform the sector into a sustainable enterprise. And so on.
