I think the diary is too focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  I know foreign policy is rightly the concern of folks outside the states, but I'm reasonably confident in saying that, aside from ending the Iraq War, foreign policy is not going to be the center of attention in the Obama administration.

If you've ever seen the West Wing -- the television show -- the character Josh Lyman is based on him.  Rahmy was picked because he knows the Hill, and because even though he's basically a centrist, he's a nasty little partisan shit.

Hey - I quite liked Josh Lyman - can we have a new series of The West Wing now please?

The character was smarter than the actual guy is, politically.  I have issues with Rahm Emanuel from a electoral perspective, personally.  Rahm has fucked up, big time, in the past when picking our candidates in certain races.

Tim Mahoney -- the Florida congressman who was sleeping with that woman and threatening her -- being the best recent example.

He's not stupid, but he's made some really stupid calls.

He's very intelligent, very nasty, has harmed progressive candidates, and has no vision worth fighting for.. he's just a sharp centurion.

... two wins for one pick, getting a sharp elbows political prick for Chief of Staff and getting his vote out of Congress. Great call.

Sorry, not a great call.  I don't understand this infatuation with a "sharp elbows political prick" as something valuable; when the cost is circumscribed access to the president by a "sepp" who torpedoes progressives, and who plays the game for power itself, incorporating no vision for "the people" who employ him.

And in this congress, getting his vote out is not only worthless, he mostly votes with the majority anyway.

Sven says "keep your enemies close," well, we're not on a Shakespearean stage here, we're in the middle of the greatest environmental/financial crisis any of us has ever seen.  Obama needs someone with a real vision to be CoS, who can then tell Rahm "the Enforcer" who or what to enforce.

Emmanuel and Obama are obviously not enemies, but there is imo divergence of tactics.

I've always chosen, in my puny adventures, either a bastard producer or a  brutal PA. Good cop, bad cop. I'm fairly laid back - or aspire to be - but having someone else deliver the bad news keeps one's creative options more open. ;-)

... difference, it would be one thing, but with a corporate Dem in the White House, we are only going to get the progressive wins that either, one, have such broad support that moderate corporates are actually in favor of them or, two, are wins against the White House.

Yep, I was arguing that yesterday. Obama needs a tough operator to manage communications. There's a quite a lot of the 'beware of the dog' about him, but I don't think he'll be biting into policy so much.

Israel-Palestine will be on the agenda imo because it will be the cheapest solution to a whole lot of other problems as well.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will obviously be on the agenda, and I do think folks in the Mid-East are going to be pleasantly surprised by Obama, especially now that the campaign's over and the need for tough-guy horseshit has gone.  Obama didn't catch all the shit about Israel over nothing.

Whether Emanuel can/will play a constructive role in it or not -- I have no idea.  We'll find out, I suppose.  If the plan is to make some progress there, then certainly having a guy like Emanuel around to provide cover would likely prove useful.

I don't know a whole helluva lot about him, other than broad stuff.  He's centrist but partisan, like I said.  But, again, I think the choice of him has a lot more to do with Chicago and his knowledge of the Hill than any other issues.

Also, Axelrod, the chief strategist from the campaign (and also an Emanuel friend), is apparently going to be Obama's Senior Adviser.  I don't know if David Plouffe is going to the White House (I wouldn't be surprised), but it reads like the campaign: It's all Chicago people who know each other and have worked together.

We're not going to have any politicians left in this town!  :)  Ok, Chicago politics is like a snake whose head just grows back when it is chopped off.  But - remember what I said about it is always campaign season? - I get the feeling we're going to be having some special elections in the coming months!  It's a game of dominoes.  Mad-ness.

Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.

Heh.  Well, if the Chicago gang governs half as well as it campaigned, you'll not find me complaining.
