I.e. saving the building for posterity through a historically inaccurate restoration. Like this one, capped with a roof and lantern that are alien to local architectural practice.

An aching example is the famed Eilan Donan Castle in Scotland. Aching because, if I remember correctly from my visit there, detailed construction plans surfaced just when the 'restoration' was completed...

Or at least "we have no clue how it looked but make this look how we imagine it could have", yes, something like that. However, in this case, that affected the church interior mostly. On the outside, they re-imagined the pre-baroque tower top (which may or may not have been more steep than the baroque one; which you can see on this older and this 19th century drawing).
