Mmm. I think the bloggers are making a mistake trying to suggest this attack has something to do with the views expressed on those blogs. From some of the information kicking about, it seems that the so-called "shadowy group" claiming responsibility is a site offering free 'sploits' for lazy h4x0r5. I.e. it would be more likely that the server was targeted in a effort to gain another zombie machine to run spamming and phishing crap from. The sploits generally work by sending various malformed URLs trying to get trough to the server 'interior' to take it over. So, it is possibly, and maybe even likely, that the attack had nothing to do with silencing anyone in particular.

And I must say, it is the responsibility of the server owner/operator to protect against script kiddies, and to keep protected backups of all material to enable recovery in case of attacks. Whining after the fact, and hoping to catch the guilty is unlikely to be very productive as sploiters are generally hosted in countries making such investigations difficult, and located all over the world.

From some info going over Dkos yesterday, it seems these sites had not spent adequate money on their programmers and server administrators to do the job done right. (In fact, it is just one guy, working half-time, and having problems getting paid promptly.) So perhaps they should look inward, rather than outward, to fix their problems, rather than assign blame.

Agree entirely about causes and reasons.  but the "Shadowy group" is more likely to be a couple of teenagers in their bedrooms at some point in the world who've named themselves after their favourite source of  scripts and hacks, rather than anyone directly connected to the site they claim connection to. Astalavista has been up for a very long time in the security universe, and if they were actively involved there would have been serious attempts to shut them down.

Any idiot can face a crisis - it's day to day living that wears you out.

It seems as tho the community have pulled together a bit and with a lot of remote support, it's back up. Only one server was down although the others are still suspect. Nevertheless, the sites it hosted are back up but without guarantees of service.

Pam;s House blend at least is considering its hosting options

I don't understand why this happened at all. Managed hosting, with backups, is hardly a cripplingly expensive commodity. Bodging together an amateur solution and getting upset when some eleven year olds take it down doesn't seem very profesional.

I understand that the site used a variant of scoop that was uniquely attractive to the sort of ground up blogging favoured by the liberal left.

As someone pointed out, it's a bit of an amateur effort, not helped by some people not paying bills.
