It is. I didn't want to cause an argument but to discuss the differences in discourse and try to find some common areas.  We are covered by the same directives on equality yet to have such distinctly different approaches to it is hard to get my head around.

I didn't take it as an "argument" :-) And am grateful you "got it out" !
I do have some trouble remembering correctly english when I get to that level of discussion I'd like... Plus I'm a slow typer !

I always have the impression I'm harsh and too blunt when reading myself afterwards, as those small phrases don't convey all <sniffing>

On this precise subject, I believe that the two side of the Channel "are" the extremes ! More northern or eastern states have found other ways then the British ones, and most of the Latin one's are less "righteous" on the subject then the Frenchs... :-)

I'd be silly not to account for language differences in a debate like this.  It must be very hard to express internalised values on equality in a language that is not your first language. You've not come across as being harsh in any way at all.  It's an interesting discussion!

I had no idea that France's approach is so vastly different to the UK, so it has been an eye opener.

Your comment on shared experience hit the button.

No attitudes to wealth, religion, disability, fame etc in any group, can ever change without a shared experience of other groups'.

Relationships with, for example muslims, would much improve if we could share their experience, instead of looking at it through a telescope with a filter on it.

And what's the best way to share, then to be on the same(sailing) boat :-)

I think one of the point you miss is the Godwin point : the only time the French state asked for ethnicity/religion of the French people, it was to send them to Auschwitz. That made consideration of ethnicity a very strong taboo in French society.
