I'm not sure Jerome would approve. But many of the early porn films were were quite good; professional actors and directors who couldn't make the big time worked with decent budgets. It was after video came out in the early 80's that the genre really deteriorated. Any Joe Blow (no pun intended) could make a film for $800 with his webcam in a $40 motel. And it showed.

What do call "early" ? As a student I had to manage a "treasure cove" of french military "special" films from before the sound era... Quite funny in fact with the less then 24 i/s jerkiness :-)

I'm speaking of the modern era starting in 1972 with "Deep Throat," "Behind the Green Door," and my favorite all time great porn film "The Devil in Miss Jones." (1973). The last one could hold up very well as a non porn film: a "no exit" film about madness.
