Looking at several media sites, an Australian magazine broke the voluntary embargo back on the 7th of January. A german magazine picked it up yesterday, which turned into a "Drudge world exclusive" today. UK and US media all knew about him, and had done for at least two months, but editors had been persuaded not to report it till later, to  prevent an increased risk to other troops in his vicinity.
