Ah-hah!  That's why it's not familiar, I haven't been to Aswan.  But I did peg the Coptic part.  (Not hard with the crosses and all....)

It can't be what I initially thought it was because (a) you wouldn't have been allowed to take a picture of it, and (b) there wouldn't be women casually sitting on the steps.  On closer inspection, it looks like it could be the Coptic Museum?
