Sometimes I think that it is self-destructive, even egotistical, to take responsibility for things you can do absolutely nothing about.  There is an old  saying which goes something like:

"God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference".
