I intend to buy a new monitor. It shall be at least 17" across (<-why can't we have that measured in SI?) and do a resolution of at least 1280x1024, have a decent dynamic range for viewing photos, and sharp for reading small fonts. But above all: it shall have low consumption.

What do you recommend?

I've heard good things about Dell monitors. Apple Cinema is also nice but overpriced. Don't know about the consumption though.

my advisor swears by iiyama, but then again he is completely unconcerned by power usage.

I"m not sure Apple Cinema is overpriced, because i still haven't gotten over the joy of watching images appear onscreen, or the idea that it will retain its color for a long time.

Dell monitors are iffy, in my experience.  Apple Cinemas are good, but, like you said, they're incredibly expensive.

Hard to find good information on this! I looked at energy star, but a lot of it's data is bullshit. In the sense that even the manufacturers give higher energy consumption stats.

To throw something out there, viewsonic has a comparison chart for its monitors.

The VA1703wb (17') has the lowest energy use (21 watts active), but does have relatively high electromagnetic radiation emissions.

The VA916,926,1916w,1926w (19') all have 32 watts and have low emissions (TCO '03 certification).

Apple cinema is quite bad in comparison, it lists 65 watts for the 20', though that is maximum rather than typical output(?). Its power savings mode is also too high at < 3 watts (Energy Star certification applies from < 2 watts).

For Dell it's hard to find power stats.
