Do you have any references for that, and that it was the same in the past as it is now?

That is how things were in my childhood and how they are now. Those who have rejected Christianity and have become atheists have changed these traditions, for them only some vestiges of them remain.

Communists did not entirely reject their own KUM-s for example. The KUM-s of my parent's parents were highly respected family friends. The childred of the KUM-s of my parents were my KUM-s also, they were considered as relatives - so marriage or sex with them would be a scandal.

With the fall of the Communists it became clear that all these traditions have remained intact among the country folk. And when you consider the mass migrations into the cities, it is only logical that these traditions continue in the cities as well.
