Another by-election in the US.  Mississippi Congressional District 1, an R+10 district.  A Democrat should have, by the numbers, no business even being competitive in this district.  To keep the district the GOP and the Conservative Movement sunk about a $1 million dollars into the race.  Vice President Cheney, campaigning for Davis - the GOP candidate, gave a speech that all the conservative media and pundits praised.

Childers, the Democrat, just took it.

I've never seen anything like this year.  Not even the 'blow-out' GOP take-over in '94 comes close.

According to Booman, there are 70 seats where we should be more competitive than in MS-01.  We could be looking at over 300 seats in the House come November.

And if Pastorgate ain't selling in Mississippi's 1st Congressional District, it ain't selling.

And, yes, Hillary won the Deliverance Primary.  "Comeback Kid" and all that other nonsense.  Now on to Oregon to seal up that pledged delegate majority.

I thought you had relatives in Deliverance country or thereabouts?

I do.  The movie was shot in Tallulah Gorge, up in the northeast area of the state.  I'd guess they're maybe an hour from it.  Perhaps a bit less.

But, still, you think Deliverance, you think West Virginia more than Georgia.

Same difference to a Yankee like me who's never been further south than NoVa. But it's not like those types don't exist elsewhere. Rural northern New England has people who accents aside seem like they stepped right out of the film set. One positive side for us is that regionalism plays our way up there. As the Republican Party has gotten more and more Southern, they've found it less appealing.

The problem for the Reps here is that the only issues people in the rural South agree with them on are gays and abortion, both of which are fading from the debate.  On the economic and environmental issues, the South is still Democratic, and that's how Childers won.  Davis's campaign was basically "The blacks will eat your kids if you vote Childers, and Pelosi will abort any they miss.  Just like they do in San Francisco!!!!!!!"  And it didn't work, because nobody gives a shit this year.

New Hampshire libertarians are pretty close politically - like WV, there is a strong tendency toward isolationism and mistrust of outsiders.

My mom and dad, visiting my sister working up in the white mountains, stopped at a gas station, where my mom was surprised to learn that there is no sales tax in NH. She asked the cashier who said "yep, up here, no tax, and no blacks." Imagine him wearing a 2nd amendment t-shirt and you've got a complete picture.

New Hampshire is a bizarre state, but it's fitting that the right-wing crazies would make their home in new Hampshire in order to balance out the People's Republic of Vermont.

I'm hesitant to say this for fear of kinxing it, but this is starting to look more like 1932 than 1994.

It wasn't a million.  Diary up Kos is claiming the total GOP budget thrown into MS-1 totaled more than $2.7 million.

Yeah, but that includes whatever Freedom's Crotch threw in, which is probably not an insignificant sum.

What will be interesting to watch is whether or not their donations from big wigs dry up now in anticipation of a tsunami this November.
