I'd like to be adopted too, if you can fix it. Is 'Locoweed Magpie' an acceptable name? If LEP also wants to join, he could be 'Passing Wind'.

I have. It has two members, one of whom just passed her driving test. They address me as Dadorski, but seem to leave off the 'Chief' honorific. But I think one of them is practicing methods of tribal extension already...

Sorry Sven, Locoweed Magpie is reserved for warriors, and just about everyone i know is called Passing Wind.  ;-)

Actually, tribal names are not evocative of some trait, but are given according to names held by a particular clan.  For example, Crazy Horse's horse wasn't crazy, nor did he act like one.  In fact, many natives in my circle would haul my ashes for using the sacred name on the net. You should have seen what happened when a beer company tried to use that name.  He's incredibly revered.

But perhaps LEP could speak with the Film Sprocket family, holders of the sacred cannisters.

That is a useful bit of info. Thanks. I suppose the naming process has emerged from the pantheistic view of the natural environment?

Some names are reputed to go back to the time when humans could still talk with their animal brothers.  But there are instances when a particular event or trait results in a second name as an adult.

Another interesting facit, names do not denote someone, they are a part of someone like an arm or leg.  In many native cultures, one does not use the name of someone who's just passed away, for s/he shouldn't be distracted on the next part of hir journey.

One thing that always stuck in my mind is that some tribes (all?) say "This is what we call a horse" when teaching children the names of things, in contrast to "This is a horse".

Probably apocryphal....

I have read about an Australian tribe that use usual words for names. And when someone dies, they stop using his name altogether. Their languages evolves fast ; they had to change the word for water fie times in ten years...

What I'm thinking about is possible tribal names for the denizens of ET. You can probably guess who 'Grumbling Clover' is. ;-)

Hey, let's take this whole thread over to the open clan, where we can spend a few hours creating names for Colman.
