The Golden Ratio is a maths thing. One of my favorite and très élégant.

Reflected in nature, used by the Greeks (among others) in art and architecture, enumerated by Fibonacci....

Coincidentally, here's mine of the Louvre upside down pyramid with small archaeologists studying it.

Oh, I know that place.  That's where Da Vinci buried his code isn't it?

The Blue Mosque, Istanbul...

Rotating and cropping gives a less dizzying result, but loses the sense of scale...and a lot of energy?

And it still isn't right.

Thinking about it in terms of diagonals, I think maybe getting the white patches on the prayer mats to form a good diagonal from bottom left to top right would have been an improvement?

Also, do you have any tips for avoiding the truly horrible flare effect at the top right?

The flare is the result of daylight from outside the mosque illuminating the distant parts of the carpet and being bright enough to be beyond the dynamic range of a correct exposure for the foreground.

It is a problem that only cropping can solve in documentary situations. In movie lighting, one can put up Neutral Density and colour correction filters on visible windows, and of course use HDO or Tungsten lighting however one wants. Time and budget!

There are often flare problems due to light entering the periphery of the lens and bouncing about in the glass. The solution to this is to use a 'flag' or lens hood that blocks the light source without itself appearing in the picture. I often use the edge of my hand as a flag, but anything will do.

And who'd have thought that Enron was a symbol of Paradise? ;-)
