These four towers have been built 110 years ago to store locally produced gas, and were landmarks visible from afar ever since. By 1986, they went out of business, but their empty hulls and impressive internal spaces featured in several films, commercials and music videos. Then a decade ago, they became the centerpiece of a city renewal project: their bottom became a shopping mall, with flats and rooms to let around inner courtyars above, exhibition rooms in Gasometer D, and a new subway station just next to Gasometer A (next to which I made the photo). *Lunatic*, n. One of the oldest houses in Merida. Known as the Casa de Montejo, it was home for Adelantado, Governor, and Capt General Francisco de Montejo (1479-1553), father of Francisco de Montejo El Mozo (1508-1565), the conquerer of Yucatan.
